The Philadelphia Baptist Association, organized on Saturday, July 27, 1707, was for 44 years the only such association in America until Oliver Hart of Pennsylvania and other Baptists from the North connected with the Philadelphia Association constituted the second Baptist association in America at Charleston, South Carolina on October 21, 1751. These early Baptists who came over mainly from England and Wales left their mark in the decidedly Calvinistic character of the churches they established in the middle colonies.
