William B. Johnson was the first president of the Southern Baptist Convention. He has been described as the principle architect of the SBC, having assisted in drafting its constitution and by-laws. Johnson was the only individual to have been president of both the General Missionary (or Triennial) Convention, 1841-1844, and the Southern Baptist Convention, 1845-1851.
