. "When I was a young student an old preacher told me that there are only two types of preachers -- the one you CAN listen to and the one you HAVE to listen to. Rolfe Barnard was a preacher you HAD to listen to! In over twenty-five years in the ministry, I have heard educated men, gifted men and very extraordinary men in the pulpit. But no one has every riveted my attention and moved me as deeply as Rolfe Barnard. He was unique. He was a man sent with a message from God, conscious of his Divine mission, bowed down with a sense of that 'burden of the Lord.' He knew that 'the Word of the Lord had come expressly unto him' and was conscious that 'the hand of the Lord was upon him.' His hearers often sensed the same! 'The Word of God was as a fire shut up in his bones' and he could not remain silent" (W.R. Downing).
