Hezekiah Smith founded a Baptist church and labored as its pastor for forty years in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He was among the founding fathers of the Warren Baptist Association and of Rhode Island College. A chaplain in the colonial cause during the Revolutionary War, Smith was also a leader in the Baptist quest for religious freedom in Massachusetts. His missionary endeavors resulted in the establishment of Baptist churches in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.
